Background of the Study
Traditional healing practices have long been integral to the cultural fabric of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, serving not only as medical interventions but also as custodians of cultural identity. In recent years, there has been renewed scholarly interest in understanding how these indigenous practices impact psychological well-being. The holistic approach of traditional healers, which often includes spiritual, herbal, and ritualistic components, provides a stark contrast to modern medical treatments (Ajayi, 2023). Evidence suggests that many community members experience reduced anxiety and improved emotional resilience through these practices (Bello, 2024). However, the integration of traditional healing with contemporary mental health services remains contentious. This study seeks to critically explore the mechanisms through which traditional healing practices contribute to psychological well-being, analyzing their cultural relevance, therapeutic efficacy, and potential for complementing modern psychological interventions. The inquiry also considers the socio-cultural context in which these practices are embedded, including belief systems, community values, and the role of traditional healers in mediating health outcomes (Chinonso, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Ijebu-Ode, there exists a dichotomy between traditional healing practices and modern mental health approaches. While many individuals rely on indigenous methods for psychological relief, the lack of systematic evaluation creates uncertainty regarding their efficacy. This gap poses challenges for integrating traditional practices with contemporary mental health strategies. Consequently, there is limited empirical evidence on the actual impact of these practices on psychological well-being, leading to skepticism among health professionals and policymakers (Ajayi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the impact of traditional healing practices on psychological well-being.
  2. To evaluate the cultural significance and therapeutic efficacy of indigenous healing methods.
  3. To explore the potential for integrating traditional and modern mental health services.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the impact of traditional healing practices on psychological well-being in Ijebu-Ode?
  2. How do cultural beliefs influence the perceived efficacy of traditional healing?
  3. Can traditional healing practices be effectively integrated with modern mental health care?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional healing practices significantly enhance psychological well-being.
  2. Cultural beliefs positively influence the acceptance and success of traditional healing.
  3. Integration of traditional and modern therapies yields improved mental health outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study highlights the value of traditional healing practices in promoting psychological well-being. Its findings are expected to bridge the gap between indigenous knowledge and modern mental health care, offering viable strategies for integrated health interventions. The research contributes to the broader discourse on culturally sensitive healthcare delivery in Ijebu-Ode (Bello, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating traditional healing practices and their psychological impact in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. It does not cover broader regional practices or non-traditional methods.
Definitions of Terms:

  • Traditional Healing: Indigenous practices involving spiritual, herbal, and ritualistic methods for health restoration.
  • Psychological Well-Being: A state of mental health characterized by emotional balance and resilience.
  • Indigenous Practices: Cultural methods passed down through generations that shape community health beliefs.
